My First Stop: Maine
I recently made the trip to Maine to pick up my new smoker from Humphrey’s BBQ, and before heading home, I knew I had to do one thing: try an authentic Maine lobster roll. I’d never had one before, so I looked around to see what was open that early in the morning.
That’s how I ended up at Wells Beach Lobster Pound.
More Than Just a Meal
I grabbed a cold beer, found a seat overlooking the water, and enjoyed the view while I waited. If you’ve ever been to the Maine coast, you know it’s hard to beat.
While I was there, I got to talking with the family that owns Wells Beach Lobster Pound. They told me their grandmother still lives just a few doors down, and we talked a little about the restaurant. I also learned they bring in more than 400 lobsters, which is pretty impressive.
As we were talking and I was looking out over the water, I couldn’t help but think how cool it is that this family gets to enjoy that view every day while running something they’ve built together. That’s not a bad way to spend your days.
I always enjoy meeting people who take pride in what they do, and you could tell they do.
My First Maine Lobster Roll
When the lobster roll came out, I understood why people say you have to try one while you’re in Maine.
It was exactly what it needed to be, fresh lobster, homemade mayo, and a buttered, toasted roll. Nothing fancy, nothing overcomplicated. It was simple with quality ingredients prepared the way they’ve been doing it for years.
This Place is Worth Sharing
Sometimes the best finds aren’t the ones you spend hours researching. They’re the ones you stumble into because the timing works out. That’s exactly what happened at Wells Beach Lobster Pound.
From my first authentic Maine lobster roll to the conversation with the family and the view overlooking the water, it made the stop one I’ll remember. And if bringing home two pounds of lobster doesn’t tell you how much I enjoyed it, I don’t know what will.
